Our Daily Bread

Chad was a bachelor this weekend.  He and Andrew were hungry.  Since I wasn’t a good wife to leave him some bread, I gasped when I saw store bought bread when I got home.  He laughed at me and told me it’s because he doesn’t know how to make bread. I just can’t make myself buy it anymore.  This is so much better.

Most of the ingredients come from an Amish bulk food store that is fairly close by.  Close when we go camping, anyhow.

Mixed Grain Bread (adapted from Money Saving Mom)
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup bread flour
1/2 cup baby oats
2 Tbs golden flax seed
2 Tbs olive oil
3 Tbs brown sugar
1 Tbs honey
2 tsp yeast
1 cup warm water
1 Tbs milk

Add all ingredients to your bread machine.  Run dough cycle.  Remove and place in loaf stone.  Let rise another 20-30 min.  Bake at 350 for 30 mins! Easy!  I like to make up several batches of the dry ingredients.  That comes in handy for the week.

We love to deliver fresh warm bread to friends and neighbors. Today Chad and Andrew took this one to a lady in our church who isn’t feeling well. Wednesday we made a wheat bread for a lady that has just been diagnosed with cancer. It’s a ministry we have as a need arises, but I would love to get more serious about it some day soon. Name suggestions?

Here’s the recipe for this one:

Buttery Sweet Bread
1/2 cup milk
1/3 cup water
1 egg
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup butter
1 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
3 1/3 cups bread flour
2 tsp yeast

Place all ingredients in your bread machine. Set dough cycle. After complete, remove from machine and cut in half. Split each half in thirds and braid, pinching each end to seal. Brush with egg white and bake at 350 for about 20 min or until golden brown.

A Stash of Salsa

It all starts with a packet of this…

Blanch and peel some fresh tomatoes.  I love doing this part.  Chad says it’s because I’m a scab picker.

Chop those beauties with this super easy chopper I got from Melanie.  It’s my best friend, after her of course.  I got one for my sister and she also has a new best friend.

Cook ’em up with your mix, some vinegar and some extra yummies like fresh onions and jalepenos.   End up with a freezer full of salsa to last you all winter!
